In Canada, radiological technologists earn different amounts depending on where they work and how much experience they have. These variations occur within provinces, including Nova Scotia. In Nova Scotia there are three separate unions which represent radiological technologists. However, the pay for a first year radiological technologist is similar across the province (approx. $20.00/hour). The pay increases each year but plateau's after 5 or 6 years. In Nova Scotia, rates can vary between a high of approx $28.00/hour to a low of $24.00/hour. Rates are similar across Canada, especially pay for first year radiological technologists. Wages were greater in the provinces of significantly greater in Ontario, Alberta, and the Territories (starting wages beginning near $30.00/hour). Over the last four years the wages in the United States has increased by 21%. The U.S. national average is $22.00/hr. Wages are as high as $75,873/yr in California and as low as $45,627/yr in West Virginia. Wages tend to greater at larger/ more urban hospitals.
There are both part-time and full-time positions available in this profession and the hours worked varies from hospital to hospital. Throughout the week the departments usually run regular shifts such as 7-3, 8-4, 9-5. Evenings, night, and weekends also need to be covered by the x-ray department therefore at least one x-ray technologist will be assigned these hours on a daily or weekly basis, again depending on departmental protocol. Some departments might not operate after midnight and therefore would be "on-call" for emergencies.
